Advancing Career Development Research

On 8 May 2026, my research team had a productive meeting with Mr Letshego Mokeki, Director of Career Development at the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and his colleagues. Two significant initiatives were discussed. The participants (see the photo) included Mr Letshego Mokeki, Dr Amanda Erasmus, Ms Kelebogile Ramagaga, Ms Ntsoaki Kala, Prof. Ian Rothmann, Dr Rachele Paver, Ms Risuna Maluleke, and Ms Sibongile Honwane

Initiative 1 — Short Learning Programmes

The first initiative centres on two short courses currently in development. The Short Learning Programme on Career Enhancement is designed for unemployed individuals in South Africa, while the Qhubekela Phambili Trainer Development programme will prepare facilitators to present the Qhubekela Phambili career-enhancement programme. Rachele Paver is currently developing the training material for the trainer development course.

The Qhubekela Phambili programme represents an important South African response to the social and psychological effects of unemployment. Developed through the Optentia Research Unit at North-West University, it is a locally adapted version of the internationally recognised JOBS programme — an evidence-based psychosocial intervention originally developed in the United States.

Initiative 2 — Life Orientation Research

The second initiative involves planning for a major research project focused on Life Orientation teachers in South Africa. Further details on the scope and design of this project will be shared as planning progresses. Click here to read more about the life orientation research project.
