A Bridge-Builder Bows Out: Celebrating Prof. Roland Blonk on His Retirement

This month, the Optentia Research Unit at North-West University joined colleagues around the world in celebrating a remarkable scholar, mentor, and human being — Prof. Roland Blonk — on the occasion of his retirement from Tilburg University.

More Than Two Decades of Genuine Connection

Roland's relationship with Optentia was never one of formality. It was rooted from the beginning in a shared commitment to people — to rigorous science, yes, but always guided equally by a sense of justice. From his foundational work at TNO Arbeid to his appointment as Extraordinary Professor at Optentia in 2018, he became something rare in academic life: a true bridge-builder.

He connected South African researchers to international networks they might otherwise never have reached. He mentored PhD students with a level of personal investment that went far beyond what the role required. And he advanced the field of unemployment research with both intellectual rigour and a consistent moral compass.

Standing in the Corner of Those with the Least Power

What has always set Roland apart is not just his scholarship — it is his character. Whether in strategy sessions or over a shared glass of South African wine, whether in Vanderbijlpark or Utrecht, Roland has consistently stood in the corner of those with the least power. That was not a role he was assigned. It is simply who he is.

It is a quality that leaves its mark on everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him.

A Small Gesture from the Optentia Family

As a token of appreciation, I contributed a video message to Roland's retirement celebration at Tilburg University. It is a small gesture for someone who has given so much — but it comes from the heart.
