Open the Door: Capability Month — The Second Gathering
This morning marked the second event of Optentia's Capability Month — and a fitting one. At today's certificate ceremony, we celebrated the achievements of academic and support staff mentors and mentees at the NWU, marking the successful completion of four short courses in academic and professional mentorship. It is a milestone for every participant who brought their time, energy, and honesty to the journey.
Building Capability on Both Sides of Mentorship
Capability Month is about exactly this: helping people grow into the fullness of what they are capable of. Mentorship is one of the clearest expressions of that idea — and these four programmes strengthen it on both sides of the relationship:
Being a Successful Academic Mentee — preparing early-career academics to enter mentorship with clarity, confidence, and purpose, so they gain the most from it.
Being a Successful Academic Mentor — equipping experienced academics with the skills and confidence to guide others and help build a thriving culture of mentorship.
Building Your Path to Professional Development — supporting professional and support staff to make the most of a mentoring relationship and grow with intention.
Mentoring for University Support Services — helping experienced support staff step into the mentor role and empower others to take ownership of their growth.
Together, these courses build capability for academics and support staff alike.
Grounded in Optentia's Research
It matters that these programmes were presented by Optentia at the North-West University. Optentia's work is centred on the optimal expression of human potential — and good mentorship is exactly that in practice: helping people become more of who they can be. Grounding these courses in that research and expertise is what gives them their depth.

To every participant: congratulations. Today you receive; tomorrow you give. Every capability that makes you a good mentee is exactly what you will pay forward as a mentor.
It begins with the courage to see yourself clearly, because growth starts with honesty about where you actually stand — you cannot be mentored in a place you refuse to look. It continues with the skill of receiving feedback well, remembering that feedback is not a verdict on who you are, but information about what someone else sees — and you decide what to do with it. And it rests, finally, on ownership of your own growth: I can open the door, but only you can step through it.
So take your certificate with pride — you earned it. Then go and do the one thing today was really about: find the person who is where you used to be, and open the door.
