From Research Design to Human Flourishing: Six Conversations Advancing Science
Over the past while, I have had the privilege of organising a series of YouTube broadcasts together with a team of committed Optentia academic and support staff. What started as a way to share knowledge beyond the walls of a lecture hall has grown into a small library of open, freely available sessions on research, mentorship, ethics and the world of work.
None of this would have been possible without the support staff behind the scenes. They handled the planning, the technology, the communication and the countless small details that make a live broadcast run smoothly. Their dedication turned good ideas into real events that anyone, anywhere, can now watch.

Online SLP in Research Design
A solid research design is the foundation of every credible study. This online short learning programme (SLP) guides participants through the key decisions that shape a research project, from framing a question to choosing an appropriate approach. It is especially valuable for emerging researchers and postgraduate students who want to build their projects on firm ground.

Short course for academic mentors and mentees
Mentorship is one of the most powerful ways to grow academic careers. This short course explores what makes mentoring relationships work for both sides: clear expectations, honest feedback and shared commitment. Mentors and mentees alike will find practical guidance for building relationships that support growth in teaching, research and scholarship.

Short course for support staff mentors and mentees
Support staff are the backbone of any university, yet their development is often overlooked. This course applies mentorship to their context, recognising that professional growth, confidence and career pathways matter just as much outside the academic track. It affirms that everyone in an institution deserves investment in their development.

Symposium on Technology, Humanity and Ethics
Technology is changing how we work, learn and relate to one another at remarkable speed. This symposium steps back to ask the harder questions: what it means to remain human in a technology-driven world, and how ethical thinking can guide the way we design and use new tools. It is a timely conversation for anyone thinking about the future of work and society.

Job insecurity
Uncertainty about the future of one's job is a reality for many employees, and it affects well-being, performance and relationships at work. This broadcast examines job insecurity, what drives it and how individuals and organisations can respond. It offers insight for researchers, managers and employees navigating an unpredictable labour market.

Capabilities at work
What do people actually need to flourish at work? This session looks at work through the lens of capabilities: the real freedoms and opportunities people have to do and be what they value. It shifts the focus from what employees produce to what their work enables them to become, opening up a more humane view of meaningful work.

Why these broadcasts matter
Together, these sessions share a single conviction: knowledge should help people grow and flourish. They cover the skills researchers need, the relationships that sustain careers, the ethical questions raised by technology, and the real pressures and possibilities people face at work.
Just as important, they are open. By broadcasting on YouTube, we have made this content available to students, staff, practitioners and curious minds well beyond our own campus, free of charge and at any time.
I warmly invite you to watch, share and use these broadcasts in your own teaching, research or development. And once again, my sincere thanks to the Optentia support staff whose commitment made every one of them possible.
