Prof. Ian Rothmann Elected to the Academy of Science of South Africa

Prof. Sebastiaan (Ian) Rothmann, Director of the Optentia Research Unit at North-West University (NWU), has been elected as a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf)—a distinction that affirms not only his extensive scholarly contributions but also his unwavering dedication to the advancement of knowledge for public good.

Established in 1996, ASSAf represents the country within the global community of science academies, serving as a national beacon for excellence, evidence-informed policy, and interdisciplinary research.

Prof. Rothmann received news of his election while in Taiwan, where he was delivering a keynote address. Reflecting on the honour, he remarked:

“For some, ASSAf membership is a recognition of scientific achievement. For me, it reflects a lifelong passion for research. When I received my certificate, I stood among South Africa’s top scholars—not as an outsider, but as a colleague. What struck me most was the humility in the room. I knew I was in the right place.”

He emphasised the value of the platform ASSAf offers—both as a space for interdisciplinary dialogue and as a catalyst for mentoring the next generation of researchers.

“As an ASSAf member, I am committed to advocating for science, influencing policy, and contributing meaningfully to conversations that shape our collective future. More than anything, I want to use this opportunity to empower emerging researchers across South Africa.”

This milestone is yet another testament to Prof. Rothmann’s mission to produce transformative, contextually grounded research that contributes to a more just, capable, and flourishing society.
